St. Bernard was a Cistercian abbot and preacher who fought for peace and unity within the Church and against Schism
He wrote many treatises on Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary as well as on theology and asceticism. He manifested the importance of obedience in living the spiritual life.
Born in Poland to Orthodox parents, he became a Catholic of the Byzantine Rite and a monk.
As bishop he worked faithfully for the unity of the Church until he was martyred (1623) at the hands of an angry mob ~ from the Proper of Saints, Daily Roman Missal

St. Leo had written his “Tome” to Patriarch Flavian of Constantinople, which was read and assented to by the Council Fathers ~ from the Daily Roman Missal
